To precisely locate where a device on a network, I rely on the device’s MAC address. Note that even if we are given the client’s IP address, this information does not necessarily tell us where the device’s network entry point is. As a network engineer and supporting dozens of networks throughout a large metroplex, oftentimes I would receive a call that a device on the network needs to be located, and this was often due to individuals connecting devices to the network, not informing me or the network team, and then issues arise and I have no idea what device they are talking about.
